Yay for sunshine on this Tuesday of preschool!
A few reminders...
Preschool Night at the Park…Monday, May 22 we will have a Preschool Night at the Park from 5:30 - 7:00 at Legacy Park in Cottleville. If you would like to bring a picnic dinner, we have reserved the picnic pavilion. Please note that we will not be providing any dinner foods, BUT new this year…we will have an ice cream/popsicle truck. Please also note that you will need to stay with your child(ren) for the time that they are in attendance. It will be a fun night!
The last day of school for preschool is Wednesday, May 24.
Zion VBS 2017...Zion’s Vacation Bible school is an opportunity for children to learn about Jesus in an exciting and experiential way. Vacation Bible School includes interactive Bible lessons, craft projects to take home, music and singing, outdoor games, and more! Zion enrolls children from age 3 through 6th grade. VBS occurs on June 19-23 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

On to our day...
And...now that it is May...each friend (not here yesterday) began his/her day with a special check-in! Each child completed his/her "May My Name" for his/her portfolio. Each friend was given the choice if he/she wanted to write first and last name or just first name. Whatever he/she chose all were successful without using his/her nametag!!! While each friend wrote his/her name I took special note of :

did he/she know the letters in own name
Some friends took some time strengthening her finger, wrist, and hand muscles while using playdoh!
Laina decided to write her name in playdoh today!
A couple future artists expressed creativity as they painted pictures of butterflies with watercolors!
After giving the books on CD a break yesterday, we jumped right back in today!!! Look at the line of name tags waiting to take a turn!
Carter improved his scissor skills as he cut out some Easter eggs that he found in our basket of scrap paper!
After a morning of planning and working together...an awesome lego land was created!
We were so excited to see sunshine and blue skies today as we ventured outside for large motor time!
After school last Friday, I removed the lid from the cup of caterpillars and moved it to our Chrysalis station inside our butterfly house!
We each had a turn taking a peak...wondering when the first one will emerge as a butterfly!
We noticed that our calendar and weather tally had changed to May, and that our April pie graph was hanging up and filled in! This month was a little tricky to see which had more sunny or cloudy. But, we remembered (from last week) that cloudy had more...just barely. We then decided there were more rainy days than windy, and more sunny days than rainy! The ability to compare more, less, and the same is an early math skill.
I bet you can imagine...we were excited to see Tricky Mouse is back this week! Each day he will bring different uppercase and lowercase letters to hide under. He couldn't fool us though, we knew every letter (and the sound it makes) to be able to find him every time!
And...remember that lettuce we started growing a couple months ago?!?!?
Today we got to taste it! We could say "yes please!" or "no thank you!" We had a few "MMMs" and a couple "yummys" and one or two "it tastes like grass" or "it tastes like dirt"!
We read a book to learn more about what a doctor does!!!
We talked more about the letter "Y"!
We remembered start your letter "at the top" then little line down diagonal, big line down diagonal. Then we came up with words that start with "Y".
Anytime one of our friends thinks of a word that starts with "Y" we can add it to our big letter. Or, if at home, your child sees a small picture or item that starts with a "Y", bring it in and he/she can glue it to our big letter!
Then we practiced writing "Y" with crayons (nice and short to reinforce proper grip)!
Time for small groups (centers)!
We drew our fourth quarter self portraits! Today, instead of looking in a mirror, he/she got to look at his/her picture on his/her name tag. We also remembered there may be more to each of us than just what we can see in the picture...maybe...legs and feet too! Not only are are we improving writing/drawing skills, we are also learning self awareness!
With Mrs. Dose, each friend became a doctor!!! Humpty Dumpty had a great fall and he/she had to put him together again!!! Humpty was in 4 pieces. First he/she had to put the puzzle together (improving spacial awareness). Second, he/she had to glue each piece to a paper (improving small motor control). Third, he/she gave Humpty a face (improving body awareness). Finally, he/she gave Humpty a few band-aids to help his body heal (improving small motor control)!
Mrs. Helmkamp visited today to show/teach us how to use the Code-a-pillar. It is a caterpillar that has different segments of code that you use to program how it moves. The Code-a-pillar not only works on coding and problem solving, it also helps students work on oral and language skills and spatial awareness as they think of the commands they need to relay to the Code-a-pillar and the way they need to get it to the next destination.
As a bit of a special treat (and in anticipation of more rain and cooler temps) we headed right outside after centers for extra outside time!!! We even got to play on two different playgrounds!
During Jesus Time we remembered the story of Peter healing the crippled man in the name of Jesus. This reminded us that Jesus is actually the one who healed the man and He heals us from our sin and from the poor choices that we make!
