A couple reminders first...
There is NO School this Friday, 9/3 for teacher in-service.
There is NO School on Monday, 9/6 in observance of Labor Day!
Preschool Playground Night…Join me (and all preschool classes) on the evening of Thursday, September 9 from 5:30 - 6:30 pm at Veterans Tribute Park (Shelter #2) on Kisker Rd. A great way to meet and get to know other preschool families at Zion…and have a little fun too!
On to our day..
Most of our friends were a bit surprised when check-in was a bit different this morning! Each friend was given the opportunity to measure "How Many Inches Tall Are You?" (Using and understanding standard forms of measurement is an early math skill).
Then, each friend found that number on our graph and wrote his/her name in the correct box on the graph! I did help them quite a bit this morning. But, as we do more of this type of check-in throughout the year, they will become much more independent!
Once everyone has been measured, we will use our graph to learn all about more, less, and the same! We did learn today that 44 has "the most" with 6 friends and 39, 42, 45, 46, and 47 have "the least" with 0 friends. Understanding more, less, and the same is an early math skill.
While friends were getting measured we were super excited to get the chance to use our watercolors for the first or second time (we have been waiting)!
We enjoyed finding geoboards with rubber bands out this morning! A great way to improve small motor control, hand-eye coordination while practicing forming shapes!
We explored more today with our Handwriting Without Tears wood pieces. We focused on big lines and little lines. We held a big line in different positions. First imitating me, then positioning them on his/her own. This enables children to watch and follow directions while learning words that describe positions (spatial relationships). Understanding spatial relationships is an early math skill.

We then used the same wood pieces to begin understanding vertical, horizontal, and diagonal. Moving the pieces in vertical and horizontal directions prepares children to make capital letters E, F, H, I, L, and T. While moving the lines diagonally prepares to make capitals A, K, M, N, R, V, W, X, Y and Z.
Yay for some clouds and cooler weather...we had a blast getting our wiggles out on the playground!
Time for small groups (centers)!
With me we improved identifying/recognizing numbers and connecting them to counted objects (early math skill). I gave each child a card with a number on it. Each friend said the number, then counted out that same number of little hippos. Success for some was working with numbers 1 - 5, while success for others was working with numbers 1 - 10!
With Mrs. Cooper we practiced finding words that rhyme (early literacy skill)! Each puzzle piece had a picture and word on it. Each piece had one perfect match with a rhyming word on it. If he/she found the rhyming word, a perfect tiny puzzle was made!
We used a balance beam to improve large motor control as we stepped over different shapes with numbers on them! As we stepped over each shape, each friend said the shape and number aloud. Understanding/recognizing shapes and numerals are early math skills!
We had a great time "reading" to self! Books enable children to develop left to right sequencing.
We were super excited to find some puddles outside to show each other how FAR we can jump!!!

During Jesus Time we remembered more about the first sin by Adam and Eve. We thought about how that must have made God feel. We all agreed that he would have been sad. Sometimes Satan tries to get us to do bad things, but because of Jesus, we know that we are forgiven if we do make a poor choice!
