A few quick reminders...

Valentines to give to friends...Our class will have our valentine parties on Wednesday, February 10 and Thursday, February 11. Prior to the parties, each child will be making a valentine bag, at school.  Please have your child prepare 18 valentines at home (1 for each child in the class) and bring them on 2/9, 2/10, or 2/11. See email from 1/17 with additional information.

There is NO school Friday, February 12 for teacher professional development.

There is NO school Monday, February 15 in observation of Presidents’ Day.

On to our day...

While others were enjoying free choice time, each friend began his/her day with a special check-in!  Each child completed his/her "February My Name" for his/her portfolio.  All friends were asked to try writing his/her name without using his/her nametag! Most were able to write his/her first name without the help of the nametag.  Others were able to begin, but needed his/her nametag to write last name.  We did GREAT! While each friend wrote his/her name I took special note of :

right or left hand

copied name or wrote from memory

We were so excited to see that our January pie graph had a new color on it...red! Which means that we had two SNOWY days in January! Our friends hope we see more "red" in February ;o)

Wiggle worms arrived with penguins and lowercase letters!  If a wiggle worm was picked...well, you know...let's wiggle!!! (And, it's still hard to stop when Mrs. Mudd says freeze. Good practice in self regulation)

If a penguin was picked...give the letter name and the letter sound (early literacy skills).

Science Time...

Sometimes when the weather is very cold, bodies of water (large and small) will freeze and turn in to ice.  We studied a cup of ice cubes and a block of ice.  Some things our friends noticed:

They both came up to the same spot in the cup

They were both ice.  

One was a lot of ice cubes.

One was one big chunk.

So, we predicted and had to know...which will melt faster and WHY?

Then we had to wait, wait, wait...we checked on each a few times throughout the day.  At first it appeared the block was melting a bit faster.  However, as we checked before and after lunch, the ice cubes seemed to be in the lead.  Ask your child which melted faster by the end of the day!

The sun was out and we ventured outside...oops...forgot that silly camera again!

Time for small groups (centers)!

We read the book "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?".  As we listened we had to remember the story and "lock" it in our brain! Because...

We then retold the story using felt pieces and a felt board.  The ability to recall/retell a familiar story is an early literacy skill.

We improved our letter recognition and writing skills as we wrote winter and valentine words in our journals!

We remembered that not only can we listen to and sing music, we can also dance to it!!! Time for a little dance party to Jim Gill songs! 

And...since we forgot the camera for round 1...we loaded up on pics from round 2!

Chapel was led by Mr. Maddick, Zion 4th grade teacher and daddy to one of our very own!  He continued teaching us about the Lord's Prayer..."thy kingdom come"...

And...one girl with a grin from ear to ear the entire chapel service!
