As our friends were enjoying free choice, I took some time to see what some of our friends know about numbers. In these pictures each friend was able to recognize the number and he/she is trying to count out (quantify) that number of dinosaurs or hippos! Identifying/recognizing numbers and connecting them to their quantity is an early math skill.
"Look Mrs. Mudd, all gone!" But, where did they all go...
Well...look what many of our friends were doing as I was working on numbers! They used EVERY cube to make 2 long "snakes". Once the snakes were as long as the table, our friends needed to problem solve and figure out how to make it longer! First they tried having friends hold them, but then they couldn't help build and they kept breaking! Then one friend tried putting a chair to hold the rest of the snake!!! Voila...problem solving at it's best!
We then decided we should count how many of each cube was in each snake. It was A LOT of counting, but we heard some BIG numbers today...

After all that counting we needed to get outside to run and play!
To finish morning meeting, Tricky Mouse was still here! Today he brought with him numbers 1 - 12! He hid below many numbers, but he didn't fool us. We figured out where he was every time by identifying the different numbers between 1 and 12! Identifying/recognizing numbers is an early math skill!
As we continue our project on community helpers, we were so excited to watch a short Berenstain Bears video all about jobs in our community! We then remembered that earlier this week a librarian came to visit, she is a community helper too!
Time for small groups (centers)!
Following along with our visit from Miss Julie, the library lady, our centers focused on reading and writing! First I read the book "Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed". As I read I asked each friend to "lock" the story in his/her brain, as we would be retelling it later at a center.
We turned those monkeys in to art! Some friends colored a bed, then told Mrs. Dose how many monkeys he/she wanted jumping on his/her bed. She painted that many of his/her fingers brown to use as the head and body of the monkeys. Those friends that completed part 1 yesterday, added body parts to his/her monkeys and then wrote the number of monkeys jumping on his/her bed! This is tough, following step-by-step instructions (and having to wait) to complete an art project. But, we are doing a great job!
We loved "reading" to friends. They may not be reading the words, but they are learning how to use a book correctly. Also, learning to use the pictures to help tell the story!
Over the last 2 weeks we have been adding different community helpers to our word wall. Today we practiced writing those different helpers in our journals!
With me we retold the story of those 5 little monkeys jumping on that bed using a flannel board and flannel pieces! The ability to retell a story is an early literacy skill.
What an awesome October day to get to spend outside!
During Jesus Time today we remembered that God used baby Moses' family to protect him. They placed him in a floating basket to keep him safe. God also blesses each one of us! Our families...mom, dad, and everyone else are ways God blesses us and takes care of us. God has great plans for us!
