We had a busy day in preschool today!
We began our morning with a special check-in (for those not here yesterday)..."How Many Turkeys Tall Are You?" Each friend was measured in turkeys (using and understanding non-standard forms of measurement is an early math skill)!
Then each friend found that same number on our graph. Once he/she found the number, he/she practiced writing his/her name on a vertical writing surface!
Now that everyone in the class has been measured we decided that 12 turkeys tall still has the most with 10 friends, 13 has the least with 3 friends, while many numbers had zero (or none)
(Understanding more, less, and the same is an early math skill).
Many friends enjoyed expressing creativity while painting some awesome turkeys.
Check out how far we've come with our magnatile creations!!! Many friends are planning and working together, making their creations more and more elaborate! And...it's a super fun way to better understand 2D and 3D shapes while using problem solving skills to build!

Just before clean up time, Josh finished making his cupcakes (chocolate chip with sprinkles)...he politely offered one to each person in the class! Dramatic play is great way for children to express their feelings and ideas in a comfortable setting!
"Mrs. Dose, would you like a cupcake?"
Tricky Mouse was still here today! This trip he brought squirrels (uppercase letters) and acorns (lowercase letters) to hide under. He tried to trick us many times, but we were able to name each letter and find him every time!
Mrs. Helmkamp led chapel for us today!
Today we focused on the Second Petition of the Lord's Prayer:
We learned that every person's name is special. When you think of a person's name it reminds us of something special about that person. We had to look closely, but when each friend saw his/her name on the wall he/she shouted "hooray!"
Then we saw this special name! It is so special, when we see this name we remember:
He is our creator
He provides for us
He has given us our family and we are a part of His family
He sent his son, Jesus, to die for us
His love it so great, it never ends!
Then...surprise...guest reader, Mrs. Helmkamp, came to read to us more of the books from the Missouri Building Block Picture Book selection for this year.
We have now heard a total of 7 of the books! She will return next Thursday to read us the final 3 books! After we have heard all of the books, each friend will get to vote for his/her favorite book using the iPad!
Then...even more exciting things happening today...we traveled to the school library to find Mr. Debrick! The Pizza Hut BOOK IT! Program is celebrating National Young Readers Week by challenging Principals to read to classes for one day! So...he read to us a silly book about a turkey disguising himself so he wouldn't get eaten on Thanksgiving!
He even gave us some smarties candy that we got to eat for dessert at lunch!
Today we introduced the letters "H" and "T"!
We remembered start your letter "at the top" then big line down, big line down, little line across for the "H" and big line down, little line across the top for the "T"! Then we came up with words that start with "H" and "T"!
Anytime one of our friends thinks of a word that starts with "H" or "T" we can add it to our big letter. Or, if at home, your child sees a small picture or item that starts with an "H" or "T", bring it in and he/she can glue it to our big letter!
Then we practiced writing "H" and "T" with crayons (nice and short to reinforce proper grip)!
Time for small groups (centers)!
As we wrap up our Food project, each friend had the chance to tell me what they learned...what they know about food now!
With Mrs. Dose we began the first step in making 3D turkeys out of toilet paper tubes! Today we painted the tubes red and glued on googly eyes and yellow beaks!
Our frogs were hungry and needed help finding their lily pads. Each frog had a number on it, each child had to find the lily pad with that many bugs on it and velcro the frog to it (Connecting numerals to their quantities is an early math skill.) Success for some was getting 1 - 5 correct, while success for others was getting 1 - 10 correct!
We enjoyed sorting unifix cubes by color. (Sorting is an early cognitive skill.)
After our very different schedule today...we enjoyed large motor time outside on the preschool playground!
