It was an action packed Wednesday in preschool!

A couple reminders before we look at our day...

There is NO School on Friday, September 15 for LESA teacher in-service meetings.

Parent Technology Night…Thursday, September 21 at 5:30 pm. Your child is a digital citizen, they are connected online and face a world filled with social media but are they ready? Are you? Plan to attend this PARENT ONLY event where we will learn how to live in a digital world and learn about technology and educational programs at Zion. Please see flyer sent home in your child’s folder for RSVP information.

5:30 - Adult Happy Hour and Appetizers

6:30 - International Digital Citizenship Presentation by Lee Crockett

7:30 - Breakout Sessions (Google Apps for Education, Second Steps, or Common Sense Media)

Here we go...

We began our day with a special check-in! Each child completed his/her "September My Name" for his/her portfolio. Each friend could choose whether or not he/she wanted to use his/her name tag for guidance! While each friend wrote his/her name I took special note of :

pencil grip

right or left hand

copied name or wrote from memory

did he/she know the letters in own name

While others were completing his/her special check-in a few friends were busy, busy, busy building in the classroom...

This is one LONG train that Josh and Jack snaked around the classroom...

Emma improved problem solving skills as she built with our interlocking blocks!

To wrap up morning meeting, a special friend arrived for the second day this year...Tricky Mouse! Tricky Mouse brought numbers with him today. You see, Tricky Mouse, hid under a number (while we squeezed our eyes shut tight). We then had to figure out which number he was hiding under. If a friend chose "3" we would say together...

Tricky Mouse, tricky mouse are you in the 3 house?

If yes...woo hoo, we found him. If not, a friend would choose a different number, until we found that sneaky mouse! Identifying/recognizing numbers is an early math skill.

We ventured off to chapel in the church sanctuary. This was our first chapel in the church and we did a FANTASTIC job listening and sitting correctly in the pews!

Mrs. Linnemann, full day preschool teacher, led our chapel service today. She used sand and rocks to remind us that Jesus is our rock and foundation. We need to lean on Him at all times and remember that He is always with us!

We began receiving our special baptismal birthday gifts! Those with August and September baptismal birthdays received a special rock, reminding them that Jesus is our rock and we can always count on Him!

With a slight chill in the air, we enjoyed large motor time outside...

We LOVED getting to meet mat man! First I built mat man as we all listened to the mat man song!

Then, our friends helped build mat man all on their own while listening to the mat man song! Mat man helps children to learn body awareness (body parts, body functions). Putting him together as a class improves socialization skills (participating, following directions, and taking turns).

Way to go Mrs. Mudd's class...another GREAT mat man is born!

Time for small groups (centers)!

With me, each friend had the opportunity to draw his/her own mat man! I did sing the song and drew my mat man at the same time in case some friends needed a little guidance! Drawing mat man teaches how to organize and place body parts correctly!

With Mrs. Dose we played a fun game of Alphabet BINGO! She said a letter, each friend said the letter name and letter sound. Then, found that same letter on their BINGO board and covered it up! Identifying letters and their sounds is an early literacy skill!

We tried our best at sequencing beach balls in order from smallest to biggest or biggest to smallest (or both)! Comparing and sequencing is an early math skill.

In our journals, we had to recall something fun that we did over the long weekend. Each friend then drew pictures or "wrote" a story telling us all about the fun they had while not as school! Writing in journals enables children to feel a sense of pride in their development of writing skills.
