We had a great Thursday in preschool!

We had a wonderful time playing outside with Mrs. Lohman's class today!
Beginning next week, for check-in, we will not only be writing our names, we will also be estimating and writing a number we estimate. So, to wrap up morning meeting, I introduced the "Estimate Jar". Each week there will be a different item in the jar, each day a different number! This week...hershey kisses!
Emily returned the favorite book bag today, bringing in "This book just ate my dog!" to share with us! We loved hearing from Emily about her favorite part of the book, and seeing her drawings. We then enjoyed hearing the story as Mrs. Mudd read it to the class. We once again laughed and laughed...another great read to check out at the library.
This activity is one way to encourage the love of reading. Also, this activity allows the children (and teacher) to be introduced to new books! Furthermore, it helps to continue to build home and school connections!
We read the book "The Mitten".
We thought it was pretty silly how many animals fit into that one tiny, white mitten!
After reading "The Mitten" as a group, each friend got to decide what would fit in his/her mitten! First, he/she drew a picture. Then, he/she told me what was in his/her mitten and I helped him/her write it. Success for some was writing the letters hand-over-hand with me. Success for others was writing the letters on his/her own (copying from a paper I had written the word on)!
Time for small groups (centers)!
With me, we made "Clouds in a Cup". First we filled cups with water, then added shaving cream to the top. We pretended that the water is the air and the shaving cream is a cloud. We remembered what we learned the last few days:
Water can become vapor and rise up in the sky. The water in the sky becomes clouds. When the clouds become really heavy and full of water, rain falls.
How did we make it "rain"? We squirted some food coloring on to each "cloud" and waited for the food coloring to soak through the "cloud" and "rain" into the "sky". But, not all of our clouds made "rain". This was great, as it gave us the opportunity to discuss that not all clouds make rain. Some clouds do not become heavy enough or full enough to have rain fall!
With Mrs. Dose we matched beginning letter sounds! There were 13 pictures on the carpet (each started with a different letter, A - M). She would hold up a picture, a friend would say the word and find the the picture on the carpet that started with the same letter/letter sound. Recognizing that some words start the same way or matching beginning letters sounds are early literacy skills.
Each child wrote our new weather words in his/her journal!!! Great writing practice and a chance to understand that letters are used to make words.
We improved small motor control and hand-eye coordination as we weaved lacing cards!
Our new playground was "full" before lunch, so we headed to our "old" playground! We had SO much fun since it has been over a month since we have played on this playground!
During Jesus Time we remembered the story of the Good Samaritan. Jesus wants us to act like the Good Samaritan. He helps us to help others when they are in need!
