Happy Friday from preschool!
When we arrived at school today we noticed our weather station had some new things in it! We enjoyed researching and reporting the weather from our new weather center! Dramatic play enables a child to express the world as he/she sees it!
While others were enjoying free choice time, a few friends began his/her day with a special check-in! Each child completed his/her "February My Name" for his/her portfolio. Each friend was given the choice to write only first name or first and last! So far, all but two decided to go with first name only (I'm sure to get back to free choice activities!) While each friend wrote his/her name I took special note of :
pencil grip
right or left hand
copied name or wrote from memory
did he/she know the letters in own name
Emma, Reese, and Jack improved scissor skills and strengthened the finger, wrist, and hand muscles as they cut out more valentine hearts to decorate the classroom!
Liam and SJ planned and worked together as they built this skyscraper out of magnatiles!
We continued working on our map of Missouri to hang in our weather center...
Writing names of cities...
And using a map of Missouri on the smartboard, we added lakes and rivers!
Being quite cold this morning, we headed to the commons to get our morning wiggles out!
We noticed our pie graph for January was filled in...this time with 5 colors. Cloudy had the most while snowy, windy, and rainy all had the same or equal with 1 day each! We also compared December to January. Our friends decided that January had more cloudy days and less sunny days than December. We can't wait to see what February weather brings us! Understanding more, less, and the same is an early math skill.
Wiggle worms arrived with penguins and lowercase letters! If a wiggle worm was picked...well, you know...let's wiggle!!! (And, it's still hard to stop when Mrs. Mudd says freeze. Good practice in self regulation)
If a penguin was picked...give the letter name and the letter sound (early literacy skills).
Our guest reader today, Mrs. Linneman (Full Day Preschool teacher) read us 2 of her favorite books! We must have loved them because we did a great job sitting quietly as she read both to us!
Emma returned the favorite book bag today, bringing in "All Better!" to share with us! We loved hearing from Emma about her favorite part of the book, and seeing her drawings. We then enjoyed hearing the story as Mrs. Mudd read it to the class.
This activity is one way to encourage the love of reading. Also, this activity allows the children (and teacher) to be introduced to new books! Furthermore, it helps to continue to build home and school connections!
Yesterday we received more "mail" from Mrs. Douglas' preschool class.
We opened and read it today...
We then took some time to answer their questions and wrote them a letter back, asking them some questions. We will deliver the letter to them on Monday!
We are absolutely loving the big playground...and doing a great job at remembering the rules to keep us safe!
Time for small groups (centers)!
We watched/listened to "Brown Bear, Brown Bear" on the smartboard. As we listened we had to remember the story and "lock" it in our brain! Because...We then retold the story using felt pieces and a felt board. The ability to recall/retell a familiar story is an early literacy skill.
We enjoyed time getting to explore our new weather center...researching and reporting the current and future weather!
With Mrs. Dose, in preparation for our weather reports Mrs. Helmkamp will be recording next week, we created/drew the weather that we will be reporting. We could choose from sunny, rainy, cloudy, windy, foggy, or snowy! I am excited to see it all come together into a few 5 or 7 day forecasts!
During Jesus Time we sang a fun song retelling the story of Jesus feeding the five thousands. What a miracle that only Jesus could do! God sent Jesus to be our Savior and to forgive our sins and to give us eternal life. He gives us everything we need!
