It's that time of year...many reminders!
Students in PDO-2nd grade will celebrate Week of the Young Child on May 5th-9th. During this week, we celebrate the blessing of young children, especially all of the young children here at Zion! As part of the celebration, there will be optional dress-up days this week. These days are listed below:
Monday: Sports Shirt Day-wear a sports shirt of their favorite team
Tuesday: Favorite Color Day
Wednesday: Spirit Day-Wear red or white or Zion wear
Thursday: Stripes Day
Friday: Mismatched Day
The last day of preschool is Wednesday, May 21.
Join us for "Popsicles at the Park" on Thursday, May 22 from 9:00 - 11:00 am at Laurel Park. Come and play with your preschool friends and enjoy some yummy popsicles to kick off the summer!
On to our terrific Tuesday!
"Home" was popular again this morning! Plenty of cooking, a lot of cleaning, and we are taking great care of our babies! Dramatic play is a perfect time for the children to plan and work together and to construct the world as he/she sees it!
Many of the boys left "home" to go to work at the magnatile construction site!!!
Sophia chose to express creativity with playdoh this morning!
Addy decided to work her small motor skills and express creativity coloring a butterfly!
We still LOVE tape!!! What a wonderful way to work the finger, wrist, and hand muscles...using a scissors and pulling, cutting and placing the tape!
I love to see the friendships that have grown over the last 1 - 2 years (maybe even more if in PDO together)!!! The social skills they are learning will be with them for a lifetime! Before we posed for the below picture, I had just asked one student to tell me about what she was doing. Her response, "Oh, I'm just being with my friends!"
Kinetic sand!!! What does that mean??? It's sand that sticks to itself (not you). You can pack it, pull it, and shape it, but with a touch of a finger it will move and "melt" in your hands! We learned to be very careful with it, to make sure we don't let it fall on the floor. We also decided only 2 friends at a time while this special sand is in the table. This is awesome for fine motor skill development and expressing creativity. (If you are in the classroom and want to check it out for yourself...let me know!!! It really is quite awesome!)
Another month has come and gone...and we have completed our weather pie charts! After looking at the pie graph and comparing the colors, we decided we had the most sunny days in April and the least rainy days. Then we compared the months, which month had the most snowy days??? The children all agreed, January! Being able to compare, such as most, least, the same is an early math skill.
To finish morning meeting...wiggle worms!!! This week they brought colored shapes with numbers on them! If the child picked a shape out of the bag, they had to tell the class the color, the shape and the number!!!
If they picked a "wiggle worm" the whole class wiggles, wiggles, wiggles...then...FREEZE!!! Yay...first we get the wiggles out, then we learn self regulation. It's hard to stop and freeze when having so much fun!
To begin center time, we completed the same small experiment as yesterday, "Here, But Not Seen."
We had some sugar, water, and a spoon. I asked the children what they thought would happen to the sugar if I put it in the water.
My favorite response from today (you can see the others below in a picture):
"It will change colors!"
First the sugar sank to the bottom. After I stirred the sugar, it "disappeared"...it just looked like water again! So, each child was given a spoon and had a chance to taste the water. Everyone agreed it didn't taste like just water, but different!
Then, we had cottonballs and a straw. I asked the children what they thought would happen to the cottonballs when we blew on them with a straw.
My favorite response (you can see the others below in a picture):
"It's gonna go crazy!"
So, we tested our predictions...when we blew on the cottonballs with a straw (each child had his/her own) they blew away!
Through both experiments we learned that just because we can't see something, it doesn't mean that it's not there. The sugar "disappeared" but it was still there, we could taste it. We can't see the air, but we can feel it and it made the cottonballs move. We then remembered, even though we can't see the Holy Spirit, He is always with us!
We then split in to small groups...one of our centers for today is "top secret", so no pictures!
We then got to work our large motor skills, balancing on a balance beam as we stepped, walked, crawled over milk and cookies! The milk had uppercase letters on it, the cookies had lowercase! As each child stepped over the letter he/she had to say the letter name and give the letter sound. If someone had a little trouble with a letter, they asked for help from a friend! Great teamwork!
We worked on sequencing beach balls from smallest to biggest and biggest to smallest. The ability to compare objects and place in order is an early math skill.
Still a little chilly...didn't stop us...we love to be outside!

During Jesus Time today, we remembered that the Holy Spirit is with us! To help us spread the Good News that Jesus died and rose again to save us from our sins. Jesus wants ALL people, all around the world, to know about His great love from them!
