It's that time of year...many reminders!
It's here...The Week of the Young Child, May 5th-9th. We are celebrating the blessing of young children, especially all of the young children here at Zion! As part of the celebration, there will be optional dress-up days this week. These days are listed below:
Tuesday: Favorite Color Day
Wednesday: Spirit Day-Wear red or white or Zion wear
Thursday: Stripes Day
Friday: Mismatched Day
The last day of preschool is Wednesday, May 21.
Join us for "Popsicles at the Park" on Thursday, May 22 from 9:00 - 11:00 am at Laurel Park. Come and play with your preschool friends and enjoy some yummy popsicles to kick off the summer!
We had a great Cinco de Mayo and Sports shirt day in preschool!!!
We decided to share the magnatiles with other preschool classes, but we got wiki sticks back!!! We had a great time expressing our creativity and working the finger, wrist and hand muscles while pulling, squeezing and shaping the wiki sticks. Many chose to create leashes and elaborate pieces for our dinosaurs to "wear".
I guess Aidan is trying to bring winter back!!!!
Ben worked his large and small motor skills while creating this tall building, complete with elevator!
These young ladies enjoyed coloring and creating butterflies for each other in the writing center!
After some time with the returning wiki sticks, many enjoyed "home" again today. Cooking, cleaning and taking care of little ones!!! What a fun way to practice language and social skills!
Creating and building ramps is still a fun choice for many in the mornings!
Will had collected a lot of blocks. I asked what he was going to build with them. He wasn't sure, so I suggested a few things...he liked the idea of a swimming pool. And, construction begins...
So many friends like the idea, they all worked together to finish the swimming pool, diving board included. I was quickly informed the pool was not for people, it was for cars!!!
We switched things up for check-in this morning. Each child wrote his/her name in the column that answered the question, "How do you feel today?" Everyone agreed that "Happy" had the most and there was a 3 way tie for the least!
Ben, Sam and Will planned and worked together on this masterpiece, "The Red Brick Wall"!
Oops!!! Sorry this picture is upside down!!! But, the kiddos were so excited to see tricky mouse (or as one friend decided to call him today "Cookie Mouse"!) bring milk and cookies for us to practice our uppercase and lowercase letters. Since success for all children is different, there were some uppercase and some lowercase letters for the children to choose.

Look at all those sports shirts!!! Thank you for helping us celebrate your children! During outside time today, each child got a yummy treat....popsicles!!!
To begin small group time we practiced our recalling skills (cognitive). Each child was given a chance to be "The Recaller". He/she went to the opposite side of the room and hid his/her eyes. Another child hid under the blanket. "The Recaller" returned and had to tell the group which child was "missing"! Not only did we work on recalling, but also self regulation. It was difficult to keep the secret of who was under the blanket, when all he/she wanted to do was shout it out!!! We did AWESOME!
For our first center, each child received a bag of skittles. His/her first job was to sort the skittles (by color) into an empty egg carton or ice cube tray (sorting is an early cognitive skill). Once sorted, each child was given a graph to complete. First count the red skittles, then color that number of boxes. Then, count the orange and color that number of boxes, and so on. The ability to count and quantify are early math skills. As many of the children finished, I heard things like:
"Look, I have the least purple skittles."
"My red and yellow are equal."
Who doesn't like cookies and milk?!?!? Each child was shown a glass of milk (uppercase letter), said the letter aloud, and then found the matching cookie (lowercase letter). Success for all children is different. Success for some is being able to recognize the uppercase letter, then getting help from a friend to find the lowercase letter. Success for others is being able to recognize the uppercase and lowercase letter on his/her own!
We used our fine motor skills to weave lacing cards.
Isaac was our guest reader for today!!!
During Jesus Time we heard the story of Peter's Surprise! Peter heard Jesus say, "Go and make disciples of all nations." So, he began telling everyone about Jesus. Then, surprise, he was sent to jail! Then so many other surprises happened. An angel appeared and helped Peter walk right out of jail and then the angel disappeared! He knew God was with him. He ran to tell his friends who had been praying for him. They praised God for answering their prayers! We were reminded that we can pray to Jesus ANYTIME and to trust that He will help in the way He knows is best!
