We had a great Thursday in preschool!
While others enjoyed free choice time, each friend (not here yesterday) found out "Are you shorter, taller, or the same height as our snowman?"
Once measured he/she found the correct word, for how they measured against our snowman and wrote his/her name on our chart/graph. The ability to compare and measure, using non-standard forms of measurement, is an early math skill!
"Taller" has the most with 10 friends, while "same" has the least with 3 friends.
To wrap up morning meeting, we each took a turn voting on a name for our snowman (hanging on the closet door). The two names we continued voting on are Sneaky or Squeaky.
After today's FINAL vote we decided that "Sneaky" has more. We didn't even have to count. We knew Sneaky had more, because that line of stickers was longer (we did count too, just to be sure...yep, 13 is more than 8)! Understanding more, less, and the same is an early math skill.
We were so exited to improve large motor skills and hand-eye coordination as we played a bit of "keepy uppy"!
Today we introduced the letter "J" and number "3"!
We remembered start your letter "at the top" then big line down, little curve at the bottom, then little line at the top (give it a hat) to write a "J" and little curve, stop, little curve to write a "3"! Then we came up with words that start with "J" and found "3's" around the room!
Anytime one of our friends thinks of a word that starts with "J" we can add it to our big letter. Or, if at home, your child sees a small picture or item that starts with a "J", bring it in and he/she can tape it to our big letter!
Then we practiced writing "J" and "3" with crayons (nice and short to reinforce proper grip)!
Time for small groups (centers)!
With Mrs. Mudd we made "Waffle Snowmen". While creating the waffle snowmen, we improved our understanding of shapes and had to follow step by step instructions!
Oh no...the buttons were missing from our snowmen! With Mrs. Lorenz a friend rolled the dice and counted the dots. Then, everyone added that number of buttons to the snowman. For some we left the buttons on the snowman and had to decide on the next roll if we needed to add or remove buttons to match the next number that was rolled!
Each child "read to self". They may not be reading the words, but they are learning that letters makes words, and words can tell a story (they have meaning). (Early literacy skill)
Have I mentioned we LOVE the "snow" in the sensory table?!?!? So, we got to play in the SNOW again!!! How does it feel? How does it smell? What does it look like? Does it make a sound? One small reminder...do NOT taste this snow, it will give you a tummy ache! Also a great opportunity to improve self control. Each friend had to remember to keep the snow in the table. If it falls on the floor, we have to throw it away, and then we will run out of snow!
Here's the recipe if you would like to try it at home: 3 cups baking soda and 1/2 cup white conditioner (mix with hands!)
We moved, moved, moved in the gym for our second round of large motor time!
During Jesus time today we learned that we are a lot like Jesus. He was a baby, he grew to be a young child, he helped his parents, he learned new things. But, there is one way Jesus is different...He is PERFECT! He doesn't sin, or make poor choices. Instead, He died on the cross to save us from our sins!
