We had a great Monday in Preschool!
We had a shorter than usual free choice time this morning to make room in our day for the many, fun activities we had to help us celebrate Week of the Young Child!
We still had time to listen to books on CD! What a great opportunity to listen to a book, while following along with the written text! Also fantastic for self regulation and learning to following directions. Having to wait and listen for the special sound to know when it's time to turn the page is hard work! But, what a fun way to start a life long love of reading! If a friend wants a turn at the listening center, he/she places his/her nametag on the table so we know who is next!
Ella spent a little time giving one of our baby patients a bath!
Jonah and Keller improved scissor skills as they help cut our straws into tiny pieces...to eventually use as "good junk" when creating!
Jack improved hand-eye coordination and large motor control as he built a wall of cups!
While Brooke improved hand-eye coordination creating with interlox!
Over the weekend our caterpillars have grown quite large...one has even begun the beginning stage of phase 3! Very soon all 5 of our caterpillars will be inside a chrysalis turning into butterflies!
We enjoyed chapel led by Mr. Andrew Nelson, DCE at Chapel of the Cross Lutheran Church (he even remembered his silly socks!). He shared with us that he had just moved into a new house. His daughter, who is younger than all of us, was very excited to get a new room! While she was at a friends house, her mom and dad set her room up so it was all ready for her when she came home! This is what Jesus is doing for us! He was here, died on the cross, rose, and ascended into heaven. Where He is now preparing a new house for everyone of us...in heaven!
After a great chapel, we headed outside to enjoy the wonderful weather during large motor time!
To finish up morning meeting a few tiny hippos came to visit us...and they brought their hut (red cup). We counted the hippos. We all agreed there were seven.
Then, we closed our eyes! When we opened them...hmmm...some hippos had hidden in their hut. Our job was to figure out how many hippos were in the hut. This was actually a bit tricky for many of us today. We knew there were only 4 left on the carpet, so how many were hiding to still have 7 dinosaurs? We tried a few times, with a different number of hippos hiding...still a bit tricky, but we are getting better!.
We introduced the letter "X"!
We remembered start your letter "at the top" then big line down diagonal, big line down diagonal. Then we came up with words that start with "X". (Words that start with "X" are REALLY tricky to find!!!)
Anytime one of our friends thinks of a word that starts with "X" we can add it to our big letter. Or, if at home, your child sees a small picture or item that starts with an "X", bring it in and he/she can glue it to our big letter!
Then we practiced writing "X" with crayons (nice and short to reinforce proper grip)!
The Week of the Young Child is finally here!
To begin our celebration....we got to wear silly socks to school...
(Remember tomorrow, Tuesday, 4/25 is dress in your favorite athletic clothes or sports attire!)
And we celebrated Music Monday! We took a "field trip" to Mrs. Thoelke's music room (in the church) where she taught us all about percussion instruments!
Then...we got a chance to play 3 different percussion instruments! We did a GREAT job following directions and making good choices with the instruments!
Time for small groups (centers)!
My friends helped me sequence paper medicine bottles. First from smallest to biggest, then from biggest to smallest. The ability to order a small set of objects is an early math skill.
With Mrs. Dose, we had to help the doctor count how many band-aids he needed to give out. Each paper had a number (1 - 20) on it. Each friend told Mrs. Dose the number on his/her paper, then had to count out that number of band-aids. Success for some was working on 1 - 10, while success for others was working on 1 - 20!
Each group planned together and then built a hospital out of blocks! We did a GREAT job of working together (and created some fancy hospitals too!).
After an action packed morning...we had a little extra time to get our wiggles out on 2 different playgrounds!
