What a FUN Wednesday at preschool!
(And I completely missed taking a picture of everyone in PJ's...BOO! (Reminder...tomorrow, Thursday, is Olympic Day...Dress as an athlete or in gear from your favorite country. Jeans optional.)
With a day full of activities planned for NLSW, we jumped right into STEAM this morning!
Last week we searched for pictures of different kinds of boats on the smart board. We noticed there were some things that were the same, but each boat actually looked quite different. After exploring each boat, each friend drew a picture of the boat they would like to make.
Finally, today each friend got to make a boat out of aluminum foil...
Then we tested..."Will your boat float?" YES...they ALL floated!!!
Finally...we asked, "How many pennies will your boat hold before it sinks?" Our boats held anywhere from 1 to 43 pennies. Three of them held all 43 pennies and still did NOT sink!!!
We noticed that the bigger the bottom of the boat, especially if it had side walls, the more pennies it would hold!
After a science filled morning, we headed to the church fellowship hall to enjoy a pancake breakfast from Chris Cakes. On the way we noticed some of the green dots that we painted last week were hanging on the wall with words written by the "big kids"!
Pancakes, sausage, and juice were "the best ever" snack (as quoted by many)!
With full bellies, we headed off to chapel led by Mr. Debrick. He reminded us that no matter what we do, whether we are 4 or 40, we can serve the Lord by helping other people!
It was time to see what we remember about positional words! I had 5 cards, each with a different positional word. Friends got to "pick a card, any card". I would read the card aloud and he/she would place his/her body in relation to Cora, our messenger for the day!
Evie returned the favorite book bag today! She shared with us "Sunny Day". We loved hearing from Evie about her favorite part of the book, and seeing her drawings. We then enjoyed hearing the story as Mrs. Mudd read it to the class.
This activity is one way to encourage the love of reading. Also, this activity allows the children (and teacher) to be introduced to new books! Furthermore, it helps to continue to build home and school connections!
Time for small groups (centers)!
With Mrs. Mudd we worked on part 1 of a creation! We each drew our self portrait. Each friend then finished the following 2 statements...
My eyes are ________
My hair is _________
This activity helped improve symbolic development, early writing/drawing, small motor control, and knowledge of self!
Then on to part 2, cutting out snowflakes to add to his/her creation! Improving early scissor skills.
We improved our early scissor skills cutting out paper hearts. Each paper was folded in half. Each friend had to cut on the line that Mrs. Mudd had previously drawn. Then...unfold the paper, and just like that we made hearts! After cutting out his/her heart, he/she could decorate with markers!
With Mrs. Dose, we improved recognizing/identifying upper and lowercase letters (and their sounds). Each friend was given a penguin with a lowercase letter on it. He/she had to say the letter and the sound it makes. Then he/she found the uppercase letter match on the carpet!
We took a bit of time today to build boats (out of blocks). We decided this was quite different than making them with aluminum foil like we did this morning!
Whew...it was a whirlwind of a day! We hoped you enjoyed it as much as we did!
