Enrollment 2021/2022 began last week for current Zion students and church members! There is NO school on Monday, January 18 in observation of Martin Luther King Jr Day.

To wrap up morning meeting, we each took a turn voting on a name for our snowman (hanging on the closet door). The two names we began voting on are Bubbles and Jingles.
After today's vote we decided that Jingles has the most. We didn't even have to count. We knew Jingles had more since the line of stickers was taller (we did count too, just to be sure...yep, 7 is more than 5)! Understanding more, less, and the same is an early math skill. We now have to wait until tomorrow to see what name will have the most, after everyone votes.
It's been awhile, but it's times for the "question of the day" to return! Strawberries were the big winner in the classroom!
We began a STEAM activity today. First we read "The Wind Blew". After reading this book, we discussed what the problem of the story was (the wind was "collecting" many things) and how the problem was solved (the wind stopped blowing, everything dropped, then the wind blew out to sea taking a sailboat with it)! We talked about times when we've had something "taken" by the wind. Then, we wondered how the wind could be that strong?!?!?
We then discussed and explored the below items, wondering what we could do to create enough wind to make the different items move.
Then, Mara noticed that the wind must be blowing in our classroom (the breeze from the furnace running), because the lanterns were moving...
Grayson noticed the flags were also being moved by the "wind"!
We bundled up to see if there was any wind outside today...not too bad ;o)
Time for small groups (centers)!
With me, we made "snow" using paper and scissors. Each friend was given a blue sheet of paper and a white index card. As I observed his/her scissor cutting skills, each friend cut the index card however he/she chose. Then, glued that white paper onto the blue paper, making...SNOW!
With Mrs. Dose we matched upper and lower case letters. Each child was given a lowercase letter (on penguins) and had to find the uppercase match (on snowflakes). Success for some was finding the match on his/her own. For others, success was finding the match with help from a friend or Mrs. Dose!
Our friends were VERY excited to play in the "snow" we made last week. A great opportunity to explore the senses (touch, smell, look, sound...but we remembered to NOT taste!). Also a great opportunity to improve self control. Each friend had to remember to keep this snow in the table.
We improved large motor control as we balanced on the beam. And...as we stepped, jumped, marched, or sidestepped over each letter we said the letter name and the sounds it makes. Recognizing/Identifying letters and their sounds is an early literacy skill.
We enjoyed our second round of outside time! We sure would like the sun to shine. But, if it's not shining, our friends would like it to be snowing instead of just cloudy ;o)
During Jesus Time today we learned about Jesus' first time visiting the temple. While at the temple Jesus sat with teachers, learning about God's word. We learn about God's word from the Bible. The Bible is God's word. It tells us how much God loves us and about Jesus forgiving us!
