First...a few reminders...
Donuts for Dads…is Wednesday, January 13 at 7:00 am! Dads (or grandpas or special friends) are invited for a morning with your child(ren) here at Zion. Enjoy a light breakfast and time to socialize with others. You can also schedule a little extra time to attend chapel with your child(ren) at 8:10!
No School on Monday, January 18…in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Trivia Night…is Saturday, January 30 at 7:00 pm. Escape the winter doldrums with a trip to the beach. Zion’s Trivia Night is themed as a Hawaiian Luau. Gather your friends for a fun evening of fellowship in support of our school. Tables of eight are $200 (before 1/15, after 1/15, price increases to $240 per table) and include beer, wine, and soda. Doors open at 6:15 and the first question will be read at 7:00. Prizes will be awarded for the winning team, and the best luau themed dress and table decoration! On to our day...
Here we are role-playing real life situations as we work and play together in the kitchen!
Many of the boys were super excited to have the fire/police station back. A great way to act out feelings and emotions in a comfortable setting.
We enjoyed fresh, new playdoh, strengthening the finger, wrist, and hand muscles while smushing, squishing, flattening, and cutting out shapes!
Sophia lends a bit of support to Natalia as she writes her name. As Natalia wrote her name, they practiced identifying the letters in her name together!

We noticed that our pie graphs had changed! We had four new months and December had been filled in. As we looked at it together, we realized that sunny and cloudy were equal! We remembered that equal also means "the same"! Understanding more, less, and the same are early math skills.
And...we loved that Tricky Mouse came to visit us our first week back after break! Today he brought shapes. But, he couldn't fool us, we knew all our shapes and found him every time! Recognizing/understanding shapes is an early math skill.
Pastor Reitz led our chapel service this morning. He began by telling us "Merry Christmas". We thought that was pretty silly, because Christmas is over, right? But, he reminded us of the song "The 12 Days of Christmas". Today is actually the 12th day of Christmas...the last day! To help celebrate this last day of Christmas he read us a Christmas book. This book was the story of Jesus' birth from the perspective of an owl in the stable! He also reminded us that God wants us to love him and for us to love one another. God shows His love for us by giving us baby Jesus!

Today we introduced the letter "D" and number "4"!
We remembered start your letter "at the top" then big line down, big curve to write a "D" and little line down, little line across, and big line down to write a "4"! Then we came up with words that start with "D" and found "4's" around the room!
Anytime one of our friends thinks of a word that starts with "D" we can add it to our big letter. Or, if at home, your child sees a small picture or item that starts with a "D", bring it in and he/she can glue it to our big letter!
Then we practiced writing "D" and "4" with our special handwriting without tears crayons (nice and short to reinforce proper grip)!
Time for small groups (centers)!
With Mrs. Mudd, we began part 1 of a winter scene. Today we expressed creativity using paper, paint, and cookie cutters to make a snowman and some stars. If a friend finished part 1 yesterday, they were able to color a beautiful winter coloring page.
We improved small motor control as we weaved laces in and out of lacing cards!
As we returned from Christmas break, everyone was excited to tell all about his/her Christmas! So, we improved our writing and story telling skills as we drew pictures and/or wrote about something special he/she did (or received) over Christmas!
With Mrs. Dose, we discovered our snowmen had lost their buttons! Each friend took a turn rolling the dice and stated/counted the numbers of dots. Then, each friend added that number of buttons to his/her snowman! The ability to quantify and count out that number of items are early math skills! Success for some was being able to quantify and count 1 - 6. Success for others was being able to quantify and count 1 - 12.
It was a bit chilly outside, but we LOVED getting to play out in the fresh air on our preschool playground! It's been awhile and I think many of our friends missed playing here with his/her friends from school!
