We tried out our new "listening center". We learned to listen for the special sound that tells us when to turn the page! During free choice, for the rest of the school year, the listening center will be open for one child at a time to "read" a book on CD using headphones! A great opportunity to listen to a book, while following along with the written text! Also fantastic for self regulation and learning to following directions. Having to wait and listen for the special sound to know when it's time to turn the page is hard work! But, what a fun way to start a life long love of reading! If a friend wants a turn at the listening center, he/she places his/her name tag on the table so we know who is next!
We needed a few more egg carton pieces painted to fill out our collaborative art piece from Week of the Young Child! We had plenty of volunteers ready to take on the task!
Egg carton math is so much FUN! A simple egg carton with 2 dice in it! Shake, shake, shake the carton and open it up (improving small motor control). Then state or count the numbers of dots on the 2 dice. Close it up...and shake, shake, shake it again! Our friends enjoyed working on his/her own, or working with a friend (one shaker and one counter)!
Yesterday we enjoyed the Good Friday play presented by Mrs. Tyler's 1st grade class! Today they told us all about the exciting things that happened 3 days later on the very first Easter!
We had quite a busy day...after the 1st grade play and a quick snack, we headed to the school library for Mrs. Haun to share with us The Easter Story Egg...
It has been one week since we "planted" our bulbs, so today each friend took some time observing his/her bulb. He/she then drew a "week 1" picture of his/her bulb in his/her bulb journal! We noticed that some bulbs have grown a long stem and long roots, while some are just barely sprouting! We learned that all things in God's creation are unique! They may be the same kind of bulb, but each is different!
We read a very funny book about a caterpillar becoming a butterfly. Then, we took a little time discussing the four stages of a butterfly. Stage 1 is the egg, which we only got to see in a picture. Stage 2 is the caterpillar (larva). We passed the caterpillars around to get a good look. After some observation, each friend drew stage 1 and stage 2 in his/her lifecycle of a butterfly journal. We are quite excited to see metamorphosis take place from caterpillar to butterfly in our classroom!
Time for small groups (centers)!
With Mrs. Mudd we improved fine motor skills as we placed beads in a pattern on toothpicks in playdoh. Success for some was finishing a pattern that Mrs. Mudd started. Success for others was creating and continuing a pattern on his/her own.
With Mrs. Dose, we started part 2 of our tree art! We strengthened our finger, wrist, and hand muscles as we squeezed "globs" of glue on the branches of our trees. Then, we improved small motor control as we placed pieces of popcorn on each "glob" of glue. Our popcorn cherry blossom trees are turning out GREAT!
We improved small motor control as we tore the paper off of plastic straws! Once we get all of the paper off, we will work on strengthening the finger, wrist, and hand muscles as we cut the straws into small pieces (to eventually add to our "good junk" used to create!)
We improved our number identification, matching numbers to their quantities, and spatial awareness as we made little puzzles with numbers and their quantities!
And...another day of warm weather...so we enjoyed extra outside time today! And, even better...on the big kid playground!
During Jesus time we remembered the job that Jesus gave his disciples, to spread the Good News that He had died to take their sins away. He wants us to share this news with others too.
