Welcome back after that surprise snow day!!!
While others were enjoying free choice time, each friend began his/her day with a special check-in! Each child completed his/her "December My Name" for his/her portfolio. Each friend could choose whether or not he/she wanted to use his/her name tag for guidance (with some of our older friends, I suggested trying it without his/her name tag, but it was not required)! While each friend wrote his/her name I took special note of :
pencil grip
right or left hand
copied name or wrote from memory
We took a few minutes to learn about all the "new" items in the classroom! What is for "eyes only" and what is okay to play with...we can't wait!
The season of Advent is in full swing...we lit one candle for hope, and learned about the Angel that appeared to Mary!
We then learned about the special Chrismon ornaments that hang on the Christmas trees at Zion church. This week it was the angels!
A little short on time this morning meant we enjoyed playing in the commons for large motor time!
To wrap up morning meeting, some of our friends took turns rolling the dice, recognizing/counting the number of dots, then finding that number on our "positional words" paper. (Quantifying, connecting numerals to their quantities and understanding positional words are early math skills)
Then...can you guess what each friend rolled?
Today we introduced the letters "O" and "Q"!
We remembered start your letter "at the top" then big curve, then keep on going for the "O" and big curve, keep on going, then little line at the bottom for the "Q"! Then we came up with words that start with "O" and "Q"!
Anytime one of our friends thinks of a word that starts with "O" or "Q" we can add it to our big letter. Or, if at home, your child sees a small picture or item that starts with an "O" or "Q", bring it in and he/she can tape it to our big letter!
Time for small groups (centers)!
With Mrs. Mudd we created our own self portrait, "This is ME...in a SNOWGLOBE!" While each friend loved drawing his/her portrait he/she also improved symbolic development, early writing/drawing, fine motor control, and knowledge of self!
Each friend created with different art tools (paper, paint, toilet tube). While creating he/she recognized shapes in his/her artwork and followed multi-step directions. He/she used the circle at the end of a toilet tube to make a big circle (wreath). Then, tomorrow, each friend will use q-tips to make circle or oval "lights" on his/her wreath!
Our Christmas tree numbers were all messed up and we needed them put back in order. (Identifying/recognizing numbers and sequencing are early math skills). Success for some was being able to put 1 - 10 in order, while success for others was putting 1 - 20 in order!
We have been talking a lot about Christmas and baby Jesus being born on this day, in a stable! Today we planned and worked together to build a stable for baby Jesus. We had to use our problem solving skills to get the blocks to stay just where we wanted them to be!
Then, off to the gym to get our wiggles out...
