We had a GREAT Tuesday in Preschool!
A couple reminders...
Please read the note from Mr. Debrick in regard to school tomorrow, Wednesday, 2/1:
Flu season has hit us hard at Zion, as well as in the community. Today (Monday) 20% of the student body is out sick. That number is a historically high number of students that are absent. We have been in consultation with the district nurse and county health department.
To attempt to stay ahead of this issue, Zion is making Wednesday’s half day of school a full day off. Zion school and after care will be closed on Wednesday, February 1st. This action will give cleaning staff and others the time to deep clean surfaces and air out the classrooms. Plans are being implemented to wipe down surfaces today during lunch and after school.
Please remember your child should be fever free without medication for 24 hours before returning to school. The same applies for vomit and diarrhea. Since we are in the middle of flu season, it is better to keep kids home if they are not feeling well. Also, remember to wash your hands and to have your children wash their hands often!
Thank you for your understanding with the inconvenience of no school on Wednesday. We feel we need to fight this head on and do what we feel is best for the student body and faculty at this juncture of flu season.

Valentines to give to friends…prior to our class valentine parties, each child will be making a valentine bag, at school. Please have your child prepare 19 valentines at home (1 for each child in the class) and bring them on 2/14 or 2/15. Below are a few tips when completing valentines:
- In my experience, filling out valentines can take a bit of time, completing only a few per day.
- Please write "Friend" or "My Friend" in the "To" line (or leave it blank), and then he/she can sign his/her name in the "From" line.
- Including a small item (sticker, pencil, tattoo, etc) along with the valentine is okay, but not required. Please, NO CANDY, due to possible allergies.
- If you attend on Tuesday and Wednesday, you do not need to bring valentines for each day. The bags will be out both days, so you can bring your 19 in on either day
And...back to our day...
Mrs. Helmkamp visited again...we LOVED getting to use REAL computers to create our very own weather reports!!!

And...Emma and Reese opted for a picture only again today!
One of the items we decided we needed in our weather room is maps. Today we began making the map of Missouri. I traced it from the smartboard and here are some friends creating the outline. On Thursday we will add a couple important cities and some rivers and lakes!
More small motor control at work as another masterpiece is created with magnatiles!
We enjoyed early morning outside time at the "big kids" playground!
Wiggle worms arrived with penguins and lowercase letters! If a wiggle worm was picked...well, you know...let's wiggle!!! (And, it's still hard to stop when Mrs. Mudd says freeze. Good practice in self regulation)
If a penguin was picked...give the letter name and the letter sound (early literacy skills).
Jonah returned the favorite book bag today, bringing in "How Many Veggies?" to share with us! We loved hearing from Jonah about his favorite part of the book, and seeing his drawings. We then enjoyed hearing the story as Mrs. Mudd read it to the class.
This activity is one way to encourage the love of reading. Also, this activity allows the children (and teacher) to be introduced to new books! Furthermore, it helps to continue to build home and school connections!
Science Time...
Sometimes when the weather is very cold, bodies of water (large and small) will freeze and turn in to ice. We studied a bowl of ice cubes and a block of ice. Some things our friends noticed:
They both came up to the same spot in the bowl
They were both ice.
One was a lot of ice cubes.
One was one big chunk.
So, we predicted and had to know...which will melt faster and WHY?
Then we had to wait, wait, wait...we checked on each a few times throughout the day. At first it appeared the block was melting a bit faster. However, as we checked before lunch, the ice cubes seemed to be in the lead. Ask your child which had melted faster by the end of the day!
And...we have been waiting for so long...our new playground is READY!!!
Each class had it's very own ribbon cutting ceremony...
Then...Mrs. Haun gave us a guided tour and directions on how to use the new playground...
Our new shed...it's empty right now, but will fill up fast!

As it nears closer to Valentine's day, we thought of all the people that we love!
Time for small groups (centers)!
With me we used candy hearts to create patterns. I did my best to only observe as I continue working on 3rd quarter portfolio items! The ability to recognize and create patterns is an early math skill! Success for many was creating a pattern on his/her own. Success for some was me starting the pattern and him/her continuing it.
It's beginning to look a lot like Valentine's Day! We strengthened the finger, wrist, and hand muscles as we cut out paper hearts and decorated them!
With Mrs. Dose we worked on recognizing/identifying lowercase letters and then creating that letter with wood pieces as an uppercase letter! (Early literacy skills)
During Jesus Time today we remembered the story of Jesus feeding the five thousands! What a miracle for Him to feed that many from only 2 fish and 5 loaves of bread. The people knew they could depend on Jesus to help them. Just like we can depend on Him to help us!
